* Fasting
Posted on February 16th, 2009 by mdl. Filed under Updates.
Just read Driscoll’s quick blurb on The Resurgence about fasting. It was interesting and challenged me with regard to an area of my life that Diana has poked and prodded at for a little over a year now.
I’ve always hated fasting. I understand the point and love the idea, and yet going without food I’ve never been able to find joy in. There could be a lot of reasons for this, but one namely is my acid reflux, if I don’t eat I swear my stomach trys to eat itself. Regardless though, the point of the article was what becomes a God to individuals in our culture? He nailed it in his example when he listed the internet. He talks about being out to dinner with his family, and noticing all of the families around him where Dad was on his blackberry not paying attention to his family.
I’m not so good at NOT checking my iphone. I used to be worse, alot worse, Diana is not a fan of checking email during dinner, thus I have tried to get better. I cheat a little by talking with her ABOUT what I’m checking up on, that she usually doesn’t mind because it normally entails a joke I’m posting or something of the like. In those instances its a conversation starter, which is sometimes very necissary.
Mark’s point in rehashing Jesus’ point from Matthew (4:1-11) is taken and understood, more room for improvement…
Something that struck me personally was how well this vers ALSO parlays into Steve Sommerlot‘s message this weekend (can’t link to it because its not up yet, but you will find it here once it is). Steve Spoke is doing a series on the character of God communicated to us through the names he uses for himself, this week was El Shadai (the Almighty God). Where I think Mark Driscoll’s blurb fits nicely, is that Jesus was fully God and fully man. Steve talked briefly about God’s promise that we will never be tempted beyond what we can handle (ala Job), Jesus in being fully man withstood tempting from Satan in a FACE TO FACE business meeting in the desert. I want no piece of tempting to that extreme, <mind blown> but I have the promise from God himself that I have what it takes to withstand it. </mind blown> Jesus himself proved that promise.
Ok so I rambled a little ways away from me checking my email during dinner, hope you didn’t mind.

Di just made a “Little Mermaid” reference in Red Lobster… Something about that makes me snicker.
* Scammers

I’ve spent the last couple hours pouring through Craigslist and I’m finding myself increasingly frustraited by the ridiculous amount of scammers. It seemed like I couldn’t read 5 lines without hitting a scammer, and of course the scams where for the exact product I was looking for. Piffle.
Di needs a laptop, Di wants a mac.
I’ve said for many many moons I would buy her one, and with a few variables one of two things need to happen. 1, she either needs to tell me that she doesn’t want a mac and that she’ll use another machine (which has some valid cons), or 2, say screw it and pick out a machine she likes (cuz I’m done chilling on the fence). The bummer of it is I think I’d rather be buying a Canon 50d.
Oh the lengths I’ll go to – to not buy flowers on Valentines Day…

What a week! Its been a while since I put in this many hours. I guess the good part of me spending so much time at the office and the like, is that Di has TONS of time to study. She called last night about to pluck her eyes out if she had to look at a book to much longer.
At this point Valentine’s Day will serve mostly to save us from our self destructive schedules… Happily though, as busy as this week has been, we did get some quality time in with a bunch of great friends!

* What do you think…
Posted on February 10th, 2009 by mdl. Filed under Updates.
Some of my friends have asked a few “what do you think” questions. These questions where asked for different reasons, but they where fun none the less. Noel asked what you thought about prayer. Pete asked what you thought was beautiful.
I couldn’t come up with a great “what do you think question” that topped (in my mind) what are your goals? So that is my question to you, what are your goals, what are you shooting for?
What are your goals?
Short term: Reign in the various hobbies I have started and actually develop some skills in them (guitar, photography, etc.)
Long term: Start an online business that allows me to travel.

Google has released a beta of its “sync” feature for the iphone / ipod touch
Pros: full on push functionality of the contacts and calendar.
Cons: for me, I couldn’t care less about the contacts. I manage my contacts in address book (mac only) and I think that is just fine for what it is. Calendar, I’m totally bummed that it won’t sync shared calendars. Diana shares a calendar with me of her school schedule and random things she decides to put on there. Through nueva sync, this stuff used to show up…not so with google’s sync.
Put I think I’ll stick with this solution as I can edit appointments pushed down to it, unlike nueva sync.
Thanks Google, bout time, but thanks.

I just had a friend air a six month old grievence against me… So I am doing the best I can to handle this properly but also cautiously as to not let my pride get in the way. I think the issue deserves response but, again, very carefully as it not only involved me but also my wife and a friend.
Sorry you don’t get details, but I am really shocked that this has statred happening all the time. This, family gossiping about my wife and I, misunderstandings compounding into epic sleep loss… I think this calls for some self examination to see if I am somehow bringing this on myself or if I am just straight up being tested and attacked.
To sum up, Noel’s sermon on prayer was a good one for me this morning…
