* Of layoffs and bumping

Posted on May 20th, 2009 by mdl. Filed under Work.

The IISD, were I work, had to cut budget this year, and axed 32 positions.  Given that we are union the pin action from the cuts is not pretty, and the individuals being bumped were notified today.

Today was more like a morgue than a school…  One of my best friends got bumped.  The way the bumps are working is really out is going to make life pretty difficult around there…

* Color me nostalgic

It is supposed to warm up hardcore this weekend, in fact this trek to warmness has already started and it feels GREAT.  I hear there is plenty of rain on the way to compliment the warmth, and with great changes in temp + rain generally = thunder storms.

Thunder storms represent some of the best memories I have of my Grandpa.  Not that I don’t have lots of great memories of him, but the times I spent on his back porch watching the storms roll in and hit are absolutely priceless to me now.  For about the last week or so I have found myself jonesing hard core to enjoy a good t-storm with gramps again…

Its amazing to me just how good we had it as kids…  Growing older seems a tragedy when you consider the simplicity of life that is lost.

* Switch

This is a switch…  I’m a young guy, I love music but try to keep my music to myself for the most part.

The switch?

I just had to close my door because my boss has bad 80′s hair metal blairing so loud that I couldn’t hear what I was listening to.  Yes I work in an office like atmosphere, yes I think this is odd.  BUT, he’s getting his work done, I’m getting my work done, and he isn’t in my office giving me more work, so who am I to complain :-)

A snafu took place with a driver being installed that syncs user account info from one type of servers on to another type of servers, which essentially changed the password for EVERY user except Information Systems users.

This is perhaps the biggest and most horriffic thing ever to happen to my dept while I’ve worked there.  Luckily everyone kept their heads about them, and we worked through the problem as best we could…aaaand will continue to as we reset the password for every user on our network.

Happy Monday.

Its a wonder we have never met, because I always seem to use the coffee machine mere minutes after you do, even @ 7:15 when there are not many people here at work anyway.  I’m writing because apparently you don’t notice that you always spill coffee all over the place, and I’m kinda tired of cleaning it up.  If your mom cleans up after you at home, feel free to bring her to work to.  Otherwise, there is a stack of napkins just to the left of the coffee machine, feel free to wipe it up…

Kindest regards,

Not your Mom

Do you have emails in your inbox that you are refusing to open right now?   Is that based on the person who sent it to you or the subject line?

Right now I have two of those chilling in my inbox.  The one I will use as an example, is from my Union President (someone I often let the emails chill for a while) subject line contains the name of our Union Lawyer (another reason to not read it)….  My work is doing layoffs right now, for now I am not included in them which I am very greatful for.  But right now I do not have the grace to extend to my Union that it would require to listen to some of the things they have to say.

Times suck.  Layoffs are happening all over the place, and this is the first time its happened here in a very long time.  We live in Michigan people, we are the unemployment armpit of the nation right now…  Union rhetoric won’t chante that.

* Headache

Posted on October 23rd, 2008 by mdl. Filed under Updates, Work.

So I’ve had some gentlemen installing new ductwork in my office and the common area outside of my office for over a week now.  They are putting in some new heat units and the like.  With the drop ceiling tiles the sounds just echo around and down into my office, amplified.

So the guy pounding on the brick wall with a hammer right now, I’m not enjoying it.

My neighbor’s radio, yeah I hear it possibly better then he does.

This is pretty much the perfect storm for a constant headache, which is pretty much what they have accomplished.  Oh well, maybe more coffee will help.

What is it about working 16 hours that just hurts into your bones…?

I couldn’t hardly peal myself out of bed this morning.

6:30 – pull into work, bearing I replaced a week and a half ago in my Explorer blows out.

6:50 – realize I left my power cable for my laptop at home

7:15 – Dad explains his morning is sucking pretty bad too, we agreed we were not jealous of the other’s situation.

7:45 – I see that what I stayed till 6 last night to do didn’t work.

8:00 – say screw my blood pressure, had a small cup of coffee and a muffin.  Coffee was bueno, the muffin was blue berry and awesome.

9:30 – Di’s phone won’t take calls.

10:00 – I ask Steve if his birthday wish was for Murphy to give me some crap.  He says no, but that he did go to REEEEEEED Robin – hummmmmmmm.

10:05 – I thank God that even though today is kind of in shambles I am still amazingly in a good mood.

Someone from my union just created a dummy account on gmail and sent a pretty honest evaluation of my Union Board to the entire union.  Some of the points good, others perhaps a little silly, some that I disagreed with.  But ultimately it will be for the good, basically it was begging for more transparency from our board, which we do not have for sure.

Its funny, I dislike politics.  But we are all surrounded by politics, to the point of practically swimming in the mediocrity.  Sad but true.  Given the election coming up, the letter from my fellow union member made me think.  They renewed my sickness, my disdain for the puppet masters.

Its a good thing God tells us to respect our leaders, because he knew if he didn’t tell us to there is hardly a chance we would have done it on our own…
