* A little help

Posted on November 28th, 2008 by mlilly. Filed under Photos.

Many of you are techs, some of you are photo nuts.  Of late I have started having troubles with the photos I’m uploading to the net.

I shoot in raw, adobe rgb, post process in CS3, save as a JPG.  On the computer that JPG seems to look fine.  When I upload this to flickr or picasa the vibrance of the picture goes away.  All of the colors are muted.

Anyone have thoughts?  I’m getting frustrated on this one.

***update***  I took roughly the same picture with roughly the same edits in both sRGB and Adobe RGB, and BOTH had the colors screwed up when I uploaded thos pics to flickr.

One thread on flickr suggested unticking all the boxes when you save as jpg, this did not help either.

The below shots, I switched to sRGB, and shot in RAW + JPG mode so it was the exact same capture just saved in both formats on the camera.  I did not edit either of them, just saved them both as JPG’s with a quality of 7 so they both had the same compression and degredation levels.

Shot as RAW saved as JPG

Shot as JPG

Here are a few more examples of an upload of the same photo.  When I do most of my photo management in Bridge.  But this time I imported the pic into iPhoto to see what would happen.

Through Picasa uploader in iPhoto

Through Picasa uploader in iPhoto

Uploaded manually via web to Picasa

Uploaded manually via web to Picasa / Exactly the same if through Picasa Uploader app

I got it.

While sitting and watching some movie of Katie’s….  Sorta, I wasn’t watching, it was on, I simply noticed what seemed to be going on.  But I think I found the key.

Why do women like being chick flix?  Because they love being miserable…  They love being miserable because it is our job as men to make them feel….unmiserable…  And if we cannot, then we are as miserable as the movie was.

Talk about freaking miserable.  These movies represent my biggest fears.  Not the biggest one, but two of the top 3.  Proverbs says the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.  That is fear number 1, thus not represented in chick flix.  Mike’s number 2 fear: as represented in PS I Love you…  I die, and Diana is stuck wallowing in misery.  I trust she would pull through, move on and lead a blessed and wonderful life.  But it is still a huge fear, that the preparation and love I’ve given her somehow isn’t enough to help her through the pain I would imagine that would ensue.  Mike’s number 3 fear: as represented in Grace is Gone…  I didn’t see much of this movie at all, but the gist is (**spoiler alert**),  wife dies and leaves husband with two kids (daughters to be exact).  That is my third biggest fear in the world, having kids, then losing their mom (like my uncle)……

Ugh…  Chick flix are written and produced to torture the men these women are attached to in one way or another.

* Social networking

Many people do not get social networking, they write it off as a fad and simply another way of shooting a message to your friends.  While that maybe true there is so much more to it.

For instance the terrorist attacks in Mumbai today.  I had links to first hand accounts and a flickr photo pool with photos of the bombings before CNN had much of anything at all.  This link was provided by TechCrunch (Michael Arrington)  http://tinyurl.com/67h53l via twitter…

I’m telling you, the internet is changing how we talk with friends, how we research, and how we find out breaking news.  Don’t be on the wrong side of this wave….

So, in the last little bit, Mason has prooved not to be the awesome safe little town I thought.  4 break-ins in one night last week ( so I’m told ).

And this evening, Roxie was barking like a banshee and I go open the door to let her in, and there are two young guys walking through my yard.  One has a black head band around his shaved head (not skin tight, but shaved) the other has his hood pulled over his head.  Seriously walking through my freaking back yard like they own the place.

Enough to piss me off, alot.  I grew up in the country.  I don’t mean to sound like a hick, but seriously, that kind of crap got a shot gun racked in your ear…  Its one thing to see some one shady walking down the sidewalk, its something else to watch someone walking in your flipping yard….between yourhouse and your neighbors…

I called Todd, a friend of mine, one of Mason’s finest if you know what I’m saying and he told me to get their names but not worry about it to much.  He reassured me that the only calls he gets do not concern any houses behind mine.  I don’t mean to sound harsh, or tougher than I am, but I don’t care that I’m in the city.  There is a side walk, and I shoveled it, stay out of my frickin yard.

* Money well spent

RivVenue hosted The Reverand Peyton’s Big Damn Band, and The Avett Brothers last night.

I am a cheepskate, I rarely spend money to go to concerts.  I hardly even buy cd’s I just load all kinds of stuff on my streaming radio and rock out that way…  But I trusted Dan Price’s judgement in bringing in these guys, and all I have to say is the man was right.

My wife, who absolutely HATED The Avett Brothers after watching a few you tube videos, had just as much fun as I did.  Peyton’s band was hilarious, I couldn’t hardly understand them, but they had me at “your cousin is on Cops.”

I promptly bought there most recent album “emotionalism” on itunes this morning…  Nothing says good morning on a Monday like Paranoia in B Major ;-)

* Why?

I’m watching my wife sob her eyes out watching the begining of a chick flick.  Now, I get it,  I understand how miserable the situation is (the begining of PS I love you) ie cause for crying.

The question is more why on Earth do women insist on doing this to themselves?

So the bill is in for Diana’s next semester of school.  Should we snag a student loan and worry about paying the piper at a later date?  Or should I snag some cash from an account that was not intended for that use…

I’m torn between my stand on no debt, and my stand on only using cash for what it was purposed.  So, I ask you.  Some of you are walking down the same road as Diana and I in this, some of you are about to, and some of you have already walked through it.

This is one of those things that I can give a convincing argument in both directions therefor I’m left sitting on the top of the fence which isn’t terribly comfy by any stretch of the imagination.

* Friends

Amazing how dinner with some friends can make time stop…  Diana and I had the pleasure of hanging out with Alan and Tina this evening, and you know, those are two cool cats.  We have hung out and had dinner many times before, but each time I enjoy it a little more.

There is something theraputic about hanging out with friends.  So, all of you friends who put up with me, thank you for all of your awesomeness :-)
